About Me

My name is Szabolcs Varga and I'm from Hungary. I’ve studied at one of Europe’s top music universities in Budapest, after completing a specialized music high school. I started playing instruments and learning music theory and solfeggio in kindergarten, as both my parents, as well as my brother, are musicians and music teachers. I started playing trumpet competitively at age 12, and by age 17 I was at a professional level. I’ve played with numerous symphonic orchestras and theatres, won multiple national and international awards, and taught brass instruments and music theory to students in every age group. I can teach brass instruments on an academic level, wind instruments and piano for beginners, as well as music theory and music literature.

I've also spent a few years travelling the world and working in varied types of positions, from farm worker to fisherman, as well as volunteering in the Middle East, Asia, and South America. Meanwhile, I was private trumpet tutoring, as well as playing funk, soul, groove and pop. I gained invaluable life experience during this time, which I greatly benefit from on my teaching path. These years of adventures have provided me with strong interpersonal and communication skills with all different types of people. I have a positive and compassionate attitude and I thrive on seeing my students grow and develop as they discover what they can achieve.

Outside of music, I have over a decade of extensive meditation and mindfulness study and practice. After finishing the music academy, I went to study at a Buddhist university in Europe, then spent years researching different eastern and western meditation practices. Currently, I'm studying Tibetan Medicine. These kinds of practices can be used to greatly help students who suffer from anxiety, attention problems, and depression, or to just simply train their focus and develop a more open, healthy, and happy worldview. Studying music combined with an easy mindfulness practice can greatly improve kids learning capabilities, reduce stress and anxiety, and help adults overcome mental obstacles. Playing music and practicing meditation is the safest and most fun way to deal with minor psychological issues and helps to find meaning and happiness in life for people of all age groups.

Meditation & Music

During these lessons, you will be studying basic breathing and meditation techniques, along with an instrument of your choice and music theory. We'll be using music to further develop our focus and attention and soothe our nerves. An amazing way to help with ADHD, learn how to stop panic attacks before they even start, and makes it so much easier to deal with negative emotions. I'll also send and recommend classical western and traditional eastern music to listen to as part of your daily meditation practice, and will play a variety of songs for you in the class. All students will have a totally individualized study plan dependent on their own needs, in case of students under 18 I recommend monthly consultations with their parents. I offer these lessons for children or adults with minor mental issues, like anxiety, attention problems like ADHD, mild depression, or mental fatigue. Also as a preventative for various mental conditions, or for people who are simply trying to learn how to focus their mind and gain some control over it in a fun and unique way. It is proven by many studies and group experiments that practicing meditation can be used as a tool to prevent dementia, reduce anxiety, and balance hormone production. Studying music can also increase intelligence and boost learning capabilities. My method could also be used as a complementary aid while going to therapy with more complex problems - like major depression, bipolar, borderline or panic disorder, etc. (after consulting with your doctor/therapist). These lessons alone are not a treatment for diagnosed mental illness, but an amazing and easy complementary tool to use to get better. I personally suffered from major depression and panic attacks from my childhood to my twenties. I can confidently say that these practices can be very effective if taken seriously and done on a daily basis. Having a daily meditation practice is essential and invaluable at every age, especially in this overwhelming world we're living in. Slowing down and spending some time with your mind every day just for 10 minutes can have incredible benefits. Combined with playing and learning music, this will bring you on a path to achieving a happier and healthier mind with a deeper general understanding of yourself. These practices are completely secular, scientifically tested healing methods. I welcome students from any religion or cultural background. These methods won't interfere with any spiritual practice or worship and will help the student to cultivate a compassionate, open mind.

Exploring the Basics

Trumpet, Trombone, French Horn, & Tuba

One-on-one lessons for students at any level. We learn to play classical, pop, and jazz music, as well as scales and etudes. With a European classical music background, I provide a high level of professionalism in teaching and playing brass instruments. I can help professionals to become better, or beginners to develop an amazing hobby. You can learn how to play your favourite songs, and actually understand what music can be through music theory, solmization, and music literature.

Young Trumpeter

Piano

I can teach piano to children and beginner adults. Similarly to my brass lessons, we will also study music theory and literature for a deeper understanding of music with a completely unique and individualized study plan. I teach a method originating from Hungary and sought after in professional circles all over Europe and Asia - the Kodaly method. This teaching technique makes learning music easy, fun, and relatable for everybody.
